"Fragment: Lemon in Shadow"

Now this is a study for a painting I cannot wait to do. What drew me in is obviously that big wonderful cast shadow cutting across the lemon. It's thrown by a knife balanced on the stoneware vase, but of course the cropping removes that information.
Seeing what a terrific effect that shadow made, I started thinking of all sorts of devices for introducing unusual cast shadows in top-lit still lifes.
