"Fragment: Chinese Vermilion"
Oil on panel, 1 x 3.75 inches
Several years ago I got a tube of Holbein chinese vermilion, which is an absolutely beautiful pigment. However, there are some concerns about it's lightfastness (I've read conflicting information), and besides, I have a number of fairly close matches on my palette. As a result, it hasn't gotten used much. To remedy that, I thought I'd at least use it as a subject.
Apparently Whistler always added a little black to his white. I experimented with that here; it's a lovely effect.
