There's something almost human about pears. Unlike fruits that have a smooth, uniform surface - grapes, for instance - the pear is a fascinating collection of bumps, angles, highlights and shadows... much like people. I once asked my teacher about the best way to prepare for painting the human figure. His response? Paint pears.
