Pieter Claesz

Pieter Claesz has long been one of my favorite painters, so I was thrilled when I heard a book devoted to him was recently published (it's a companion to a travelling exhibit of his paintings that I unfortunately missed last year). After being on backorder for a month, it finally arrived this week, and I spent happy hours devouring it. The text consists of four long essays; one historical, one biographical, and two critical. They're written in a style of scholarly interpretation that normally doesn't hold my interest for long, but I did learn new and worthwhile things. The real glory of the book though, it the art; dozens and dozens of nearly full-page reproductions of Claesz's gentle miracles.
Anybody with even a casual interest in still-life should consider adding this to their libraries. In my opinion, it is required reading for artists. This is not a book for your coffee table or to be casually lent out to friends. This one is for your nightstand.

Painting A Day: Marble Egg

Sold
This egg was a gift from my friend Stuart Dunkel. He's a typical Renaissance Man; artist, musician, author, businessman, and probably a few good things he hasn't mentioned. Thanks Stuart!

Art Calendar Article
In October's edition of Art Calendar magazine, publisher Carolyn Proeber has written a lengthy article about the Painting-A-Day movement. I'm very pleased to have been included; my recent sunflower painting (above) was reproduced, as well as some of my thoughts about the nature and appeal of Painting-A-Day. It was of course an honor to have been mentioned on the same page as some of the luminaries among the Painting-A-Day practitioners: Duane Keiser, Neil Hollingsworth, Darren Maurer and Maggie Stiefvater.
Carolyn has included much valuable information and background, making it required reading for anybody currently doing, or even considering, Painting-A-Day. It is highly recommended reading for anybody else who is interested in it. Ask for it at your local bookstore.

Haiku: Asparagus Tip: $50

Haiku: Asparagus Tip
Oil on Panel, 2.5" x 3.5"
$50 (unframed, free domestic shipping, $5 international)
Sold
In addition to my somewhat larger weekday Paintings-A-Day, I'm now starting to offer smaller pieces on weekends, which I'm calling my "Haiku" series. These are original oil on panel paintings, and are typically smaller than 10 square inches. Rather than offering these as eBay auctions, for now at least I'll be making them directly available here on my blog. The cost for each will be $50, unframed, and I will ship them for free to a US address. International shipping will be $5 (I may adjust this downward if I've overestimated). The first person to email me about the painting can reserve it until payment is received.
