Painting A Day in USAToday

For those of you who may not have seen it, USAToday ran an article this week covering the painting-a-day (and artist-as-blogger) phenomenon and they ways in which it is changing both how art is made and how it is collected. It focuses mainly on Duane Keiser, who pioneered the movement and has been a source of inspiration to many artists, myself included. He also recently started a "text" blog (as opposed to his painting blog), where he has some interesting posts on the origin of his practice, and the effects that it has had on others. The USAToday article also makes a nice mention of Justin Clayton and Julian Merrow-Smith.

The Daily Painting Project

Starting this week, I'm embarking on a new artistic adventure: to produce a new painting every day, mondays through fridays. These will be very high quality, finished paintings, done with oil on panel or linen, and typically 6"x8" and smaller. My posting from earlier today is one example. When each one is completed, they will be posted here with a link to my eBay store, where they will be offered at a low starting bid of just $100. Unless otherwise indicated, they will be framed and ready to hang.

I'm tremendously excited to begin this challenging project. I know the discipline will offer the opportunity for real technical and artistic growth, and I hope you will enjoy following the results here... check back often!

Orbit No. 9

Orbit No. 9: Interloper
Oil on panel
3.5 x 6

This is the latest in my Orbit series. Lately, I've been painting on acrylic-primed panels, but I also have a batch of tradition gesso-primed boards laying around. These are great to work with but EXTREMELY absorbent. It's very, very odd to be working with oils, step away for 1/2 an hour, and come back to a nearly dry surface. Kinda throws you off your game a little...

Note: For those IllustrationFriday readers who might be curious, the etymology of the word interloper is: inter– + probably Middle Dutch loper, runner (from lopen, to run).

Vanity

Vanity
Oil on linen on panel
16" x 12"

For the last few weeks I've been trying to do some mid-size still lifes, and this is the latest. I offer it with the customary protestations that it looks much better in real life. Photographing artwork is an art in and of itself, and so far I'm pretty much stabbing in the dark at it.
